Converting older FileMaker Pro files

I have FileMaker Pro 5, what do I do with FileMaker 3/4 files?

Many of the files (in fact a large percentage) were created in version 3 or 4 of FileMaker Pro. There are actually no differences in the database file format between 3 and 4. However, the format for FileMaker Pro 5 files did change. This means older files must first be converted before opening them in FileMaker 5.

Converting is very simple. After you have uncompressed the files, simply select all of the files (FileMaker files only) within a folder and drag them on top of the FileMaker Pro application icon. After a short pause FileMaker will then open each file and ask you if you want to rename the files. Since it is likely you will be saving the files into a new folder it is not necessary to rename the older files to contain the word "old".

File icons will appear generic within some of the archives if you do not have a version of FileMaker prior to 5.
These files are still perfectly useable FileMaker Pro files. You just need to convert them.

The best method for converting the files is to drag multiple files at once. Select all of the .FP3 files at one time by selecting outside the group and dragging the selection box around them or select individual files by holding down the Control key while selecting.

.

With the files selected simply drag them on top of the FileMaker Pro icon. You will need to open the FileMaker Pro window which is typically stored in C:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Pro (Your system may vary regarding where FileMaker Pro has been installed)

You can uncheck the rename option as long as you know you will be putting the files into a new location or the suffix of .FP3 will change to .FP5 causing the file to have a different name.
