Uncompressing files from the CDs

There were two primary compression formats used for compressing the files on the CD ROMS. The two formats were .sit (Stuffit Expander) and .zip (Windows Zip). Along with these formats, files may be provided by authors as custom installers which will either be in a .sea (Self Expanding Archive) for Macintosh, an Install application for Macintosh or .exe (Executable) application for Windows.

You may already have some type of expansion program already installed on your computer. If you do not then copies have been provided on the CD #1.

With an expansion program installed you should be able to double-click a file archive and be able to extract the files to your location of choice.

Installing Aladdin's Stuffit Expander

In most all cases your Macintosh already has a copy of Stuffit Expander installed. However, it may not be the most recent. Expander is a very common application for the Macintosh. In the rare case you are running an older version of the Macintosh OS, or you have thrown away all copies of Stuffit Expander, you should install the copy found on the CD ROM in the CD Tools folder. There is also the possibility that double-clicking the files found on the CD ROM open Stuffit Deluxe instead of simply uncompressing the file.

Option #1:

Select the Install Uncompressing Tool (Mac) from the Script menu. This will install the lite version 6.5 of Stuffit Expander for your current OS. If you are running OS X the proper version should be installed.

Option #2:

Run the installer manually. Included are two different versions. The 6.5 Lite is for Mac Classic OS and the other is labeled for OS X.

While Aladdin's Stuffit will handle the .zip format we have also included ZipIt for both Mac classic and OS X. (We find the format output by ZipIt to be more compatible when compressing for Windows)
